Biosecurity Training for Disaster Preparedness & Skill Development of Microbiology Lab Professionals

Developing a Biosecurity Training Program for Preparedness for Future Disasters and Increasing the Voc. Skills of Microbiology Lab Health Professionals (Micro Lab Secure)

Micro Lab Secure Project

The "Developing a Biosecurity Training Program for Preparedness for Future Disasters and Increasing the Vocational Skills of Microbiology Laboratory Health Professionals" project, funded under the Erasmus+ KA210-VET Action, addresses the urgent need for enhanced disaster preparedness and biosecurity measures within microbiology laboratories. Motivated by the increasing frequency of natural disasters and global health threats, the project aims to empower laboratory professionals with the knowledge, skills, and resources necessary to effectively manage biosecurity risks before, during, and after disasters. Through collaborative efforts among the Turkish Society of Microbiology, Universidade do Minho (Portugal), and Universidad de Granada (Spain), this project seeks to develop comprehensive digital training materials, detailed biosecurity instructions and algorithms, and a digital resource center accessible to healthcare professionals. This guide has been prepared to support the implementation, management, and dissemination of the project activities by offering a structured framework for all partners. It outlines the project’s objectives, operational plans, responsibilities, and communication strategies to ensure the project’s success and sustainability.

Project title

Project Acronym: MicroLabSecure
Field: Vocational Education and Training

Coordinator organisation, project duration and budget

MicroLabSecure is a Cooperation partnerships in Vocational Education and Training (KA210-VET) under the Erasmus + Programme coordinated by Turkish Society of Microbiology. MicroLabSecure Project duration is 18 months, starting at 01/09/2024 and ending at 28/02/2026.

The aim and objectives of MicroLabSecure

This project aims to identify the biosecurity risks and management that medical microbiology laboratory workers may face before, during, and after a disaster, to increase the vocational skills of workers on biosecurity, and to create a digital training set and resource center. The objectives of the project are;

  • To create instructions and algorithms including biosecurity measures to be taken in the microbiology laboratory before, during, and after the disaster,
  • To create digital training sets to increase the vocational skills of microbiology laboratory workers,
  • To create a digital resource center on an online platform that staff can access on biosecurity in disasters

The project target groups

Direct groups;

  • Laboratory staff including medical doctors, biologists, technicians, research assistants, secretaries, and cleaning staff.
  • Members of relevant professional associations. Indirect groups;
  • Students in faculties of medicine and vocational schools of health services
  • Personnel associated with university research centers
